The Amdec Group was founded in Cape Town in 1989 by father and son John and James Wilson. Early projects were residential renovations in the Cape south peninsula, followed by commercial schemes such as Westlake Lifestyle Centre and the Tyger Lake precinct. In 2005 it secured a 50% share of the Melrose Arch mixed-use precinct in Johannesburg, and later built inclusionary housing and expanded nationally.
